Draft Roundup: Day One

The MLB draft made it through 18 rounds today, and a lot of information on the selections can be found on mlb.com.

Since I'm not the MLB version of Mel Kiper, I don't have any particularly unusual insights to offer into the Twins draft choices, but I am going to make a few generalized conclusions at the end of this post on how I feel the Twins first day went. First, here are the first day's selections for the Twins:

Round/Overall/Name/other info
1/20 - Christopher Parmelee - RF - high school
2/64 - William Benson - LF - high school
3/96 - Tyler Robertson - LHP - high school
4/119 - Whitney Robins - 1B - college senior
4/126 - Garrett Olson - 3B - college senior
5/156 - Devin Shepherd - RF - high school
6/186 - Jeffrey Christy - C - college senior
7/216 - Jonathan Waltenbury - 1B - high school
8/246 - Brian Dinkelman - 2B - college senior
9/276 - Sean Land - LHP - college senior
10/306 - Jared Mitchell - CF - high school
11/336 - Steven Singleton - SS - college senior
12/366 - Kevin Harrington - CF - high school
13/396 - Aaron Senne - RF - high school (Minnesota Native)
14/426 - Jeffrey Manship - RHP - college senior
15/456 - Mark Dolenc - RF - college senior (Minnesota Native)
16/486 - Shayne Wilson - RF - high school
17/516 - Andrew Oliver - LHP - high school
18/546 - Christopher Anderson - LHP - college junior

A couple things of note. First, unlike the last few years, the Twins went heavy for position players rather than pitchers. Probably just trying to find a balance for the minor league system, but man did they hit the outfielders hard. Second, the Twins first three picks were high schoolers, which is probably an indication that the Twins didn't feel the college talent this year was great. Here are some numbers breakdowns of the first day:

19 total picks - 10 high school/8 college seniors/1 college junior
14 position players
5 pitchers (4 of whom were left-handed)
2 Minnesotans

I'll post another update tomorrow after the draft is complete. My guess is that the Twins will continue to draft more position players than pitchers, but that the ratio will close a little bit.
