That shows how smart I am, 0-3. I guess they are going to leave one spot open for a free agent signing or to take someone in the rule 5 draft.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29090025.post-90935358644399601422007-11-20T11:43:00.000-07:002007-11-20T11:43:00.000-07:00Lahey is a longshot, but he should be on the list ...Lahey is a longshot, but he should be on the list of possibilities.

Matthew Fox was the 35th player in the draft when taken by the Twins in 2004, so he certainly had potential at one point. He came up sore armed and missed 2005. He has had limited innings the last two years. If he still has his original potential, he would get taken. And, in that case, he would be a big loss.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29090025.post-66683394932961995202007-11-20T10:17:00.000-07:002007-11-20T10:17:00.000-07:00Pino pitched for the Twins Dominican Summer League...Pino pitched for the Twins Dominican Summer League team in 2004, so I do think that he would be eligible. Not sure though.

Matt Fox is a possiblity, but he's not likely to be taken and not a huge risk to the Twins if they lose him.

One other name to consider would be Tim Lahey. his numbers haven't been great. He needs to cut down on the number of walks. But he's only really been pitching for two years and he got up to AAA this year. Might be worth some risk. I'd much rather protect him that Martinez or Sawatski, I guess.

SethSpeaks.netAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29090025.post-60383303504429587352007-11-20T09:42:00.000-07:002007-11-20T09:42:00.000-07:00Thanks for the comments, Seth and Anon -- I think ...Thanks for the comments, Seth and Anon -- I think everything that has been said is certainly interesting.

As for Pino -- he wasn't on my list of arbitration eligibles, but I think Seth could be right that he's eligible. The question isn't necessarily how many seasons he's played, but when he was signed. If he signed the year before he started playing, then he would be eligible. Seth is probably right that he's eligible, but I wouldn't add him because I think there's a very low risk of him being taken.

Can't wait to see the list!JSThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12207754797909843134noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29090025.post-3822212404400890412007-11-20T09:36:00.000-07:002007-11-20T09:36:00.000-07:00Tolbert is not a shortstop and not all that hot de...Tolbert is not a shortstop and not all that hot defensively at second, so he doesn't really fit as a utility infielder.

Matthew Fox is a possibility. He only pitched low A ball this year, but he was highly regarded before he got hurt. It depends on how they project his recovery.

I would expect Moses and Winfree to be on the list. They are hard to hide on a roster. But they have the sorts of high upsides that teams will take a flyer on hoping an extra year of maturity will allow them to hold a roster spot.

Peterson is an interesting case. Are his numbers real or just a reflection of the ability to hit minor league fastballs.

Guzman is the sort of player who will hold a roster spot at AAA because he is a good player. But I don't think he really has any major league skills. He doesn't have above average defense, speed or power.

My guess:

Martinez
Moses
Winfree
Sawatski

If Pino is eligible for the rule 5 draft, I think he is a lock for a roster spot. But he appears to only have three years of minor league experience.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29090025.post-47861681139987847682007-11-20T07:50:00.000-07:002007-11-20T07:50:00.000-07:00Just to further discuss JP Martinez. he began the ...Just to further discuss JP Martinez. he began the season pitching adequately for New Britain. He was moved up to Rochester's bullpen fairly early because of call ups and such. He was bad, so they moved him back down the New Britain, where he was bad again. He spent probably the last 4-6 weeks at Ft. Myers where he did well, as you would expect someone his age to do.

SethSpeaks.netAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29090025.post-62860793055900571092007-11-20T07:48:00.000-07:002007-11-20T07:48:00.000-07:00I think I would replace JP Martinez with Yohan Pin...I think I would replace JP Martinez with Yohan Pino. Martinez fell backward quite a bit in 2007, ending the year back at Ft. Myers. I don't know that Pino would be selected, but I think he's a better pitcher.

Peterson has power and his batting eye improved drastically in the 2nd half. He could be taken.

I think Guzman's bat is ready for the big leagues. I would add him.

Tolbert would likely be taken. Utility infielders are often taken because you can play them sporadically.

Personally, I would add Winfree.

There is no way that the Twins should even be considering taking Julio DePaula off of the list at this time, but Barrett, Basak and McDonald, along with Errol Simonitsch, could certainly be removed to make room for others.

SethSpeaks.netAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
